How to Build Something Worth Buying

I was recently interviewed on Sandy Lee's YouTube about how I've made over $10,000 selling Claude skills.

The answer is boring - I didn't chase a trend. I packaged the marketing work I was already doing for clients every day.

Here's the test I'd run on your idea before you build anything:

• Are people already asking you for it? Marketers were emailing me for my SEO skills by name before the product existed. If nobody's asking, you're guessing.
• Does it carry context nobody else can generate? A decade of marketing is baked into those files. That's what AI can't fake for you, and it's the whole reason someone pays.
• Does it take real work off someone's plate? People buy things that save them hours, not things a countdown timer told them to grab.
• Would you defend it to the buyer's face? If that makes you wince, you built slop.

Notice every one of those is about what you already know. Not what you can spin up this weekend.

You've spent 5+ years getting good at something, and that's the moat. Marketing, real estate, lawn care, grant writing, coaching, trading sports cards. Nothing is exempt. AI doesn't replace your expertise, it multiplies it.

I'm a non-technical marketer who was scared of the word "terminal" at the start of this year. I don't write code.

If you can use Claude or ChatGPT, you have enough technical skill to do this.

Stop Selling AI Slop Products

Now here's what to run from.

Open YouTube and search "best AI side hustles." You'll get the same videos from the same hype grifters.

Faceless AI videos, AI PDFs, AI ebooks, Prompt packs, Agent templates that supposedly run your business while you sleep.

This is all garbage nonsense that almost never works in the long term, and even when it does, you're competing with 10,000 people doing the identical thing. Zero moat.

Nobody selling that advice ever asks the only question that matters: would someone pay for this twice?

Run my four questions against any of it and watch all four fail. Nobody asked for it. It carries no context you couldn't generate in five minutes, and it saves nobody any real work.

The tell is that their product is always a video about making money. Not the thing that made the money.
