πŸ€– OpenAI DevDay 2025 Recap

OpenAI held their DevDay event this week, and like clockwork my social media feed exploded with "🀯 OpenAI's INSANE Updates Changed Everything!" and "πŸ’€ RIP n8n & Zapier!"

But after spending some time diving into these new OpenAI features, I'm calling BS on most of the hype.

I suggest watching my full video recap below:

πŸ‘‰ Watch: OpenAI DevDay 2025 Updates

Now let me break down what actually matters from OpenAI's DevDay announcements.

πŸ›  ChatGPT Apps (This Actually Looks Promising)

OpenAI now lets you access apps directly inside ChatGPT's interface. This includes Canva, Spotify, Zillow, Booking.com, Expedia, and a few others listed on their website.

Some are saying this could be the next 'Apple App Store' but time will tell. Plugins and the GPT Store were a bust IMO so maybe third time's a charm?

I believe these ChatGPT apps are available to everyone (free & paid), and if you click the @ button on your keyboard you should see a dropdown of apps.

This feels like a revamped version of 'ChatGPT Plugins' but way better executed. Plugins were a complete bust lol.

I tested the Canva integration and generated some graphics right inside ChatGPT. Were they perfect? No, but I could open them in Canva's editor and make adjustments from there.

The Zillow app integration was actually impressive. I searched for houses in Des Moines under $500K with 4+ bedrooms, and everything showed up nicely inside ChatGPT's interface without creating an account.

My Take on ChatGPT Apps: This has way more promise than Plugins or the GPT Store ever did.

The X factor here is whether or not OpenAI will let third-party app developers thrive.

Apple didn't become Apple by hoarding everything. Their App Store became a multi-billion dollar ecosystem because they incentivized 3rd party developers.

If OpenAI tries to control everything and keep it locked down, this will flop just like Plugins and the GPT Store.

πŸ€– Agent Builder (Is It Worth Your Time?)

Now here's where things get interesting.

OpenAI launched Agent Builder, and the AI hype bros won't shut up about how it's the "n8n killer" that will also replace Make.com and Zapier.

This is available for free on OpenAI's Platform but does require you to sign up.

After testing it myself and talking with automation experts, I'm not buying the Agent Builder hype. Here's why:

  • OpenAI models only - You can't use Claude, Gemini, or Grok models. If you prefer other models for certain tasks, you're screwed.
  • Steep learning curve - This isn't easier than n8n or Make. You still need technical knowledge to build anything useful. Some parts are even MORE technical than existing automation platforms.
  • Pricing - There's zero transparency right now on what Agent Builder will cost to run at scale.
  • First version problems - Remember Sora 1? DALL-E 1? ChatGPT Plugins? GPTs? OpenAI's first versions always need serious work before they're production-ready.
  • Limited MCP integrations - The connections are buggy and still a lot of hiccups to work through here.
  • Poor debugging experience - Unlike Make or n8n, you can't easily see what happened at each node. The execution logs are minimal and hard to trace.
  • Recycled features - A lot of Agent Builder is just repackaged from the Assistants API (which they're deprecating). File search, vector stores, and evaluations all existed before.

Am I Switching My AI Automations Over to OpenAI's Agent Builder?

Absolutely not lol. I'm sticking with Make.com for my business automations, and if you use n8n/Zapier I suggest doing the same.

My social media automation, content repurposing workflows, and client systems aren't moving to Agent Builder anytime soon (if ever).

There are too many limitations, too many bugs, and too much of a learning curve for something that doesn't offer clear advantages over what already works.

πŸ’₯ Other OpenAI DevDay Updates Worth Noting

  • Sora 2 in the API - Costs $0.50 per second. Expensive from an API perspective, but cheap compared to traditional video production.
  • GPT Image 1 Mini - 80% cheaper than the full GPT Image 1 model. I actually use this in some of my automations, so this is great news for me.
  • GPT Realtime Mini - 70% cheaper AI voice model. Hopefully OpenAI's voice models start competing with ElevenLabs.
  • GPT-5 Pro in the API - More powerful reasoning model now available for developers.

What do you think about OpenAI's latest updates? Will you be using Agent Builder? Reply to this email - I read every response!

Pretty much lol

That's where this all seems to be headed:

AI Automations > AI Agents (most don't know the difference)

I'm so sick of these AEO/GEO gurus. I Haven't heard a good answer to this question yet:
