🌐 OpenAI Launches 'ChatGPT Atlas' Browser

OpenAI just launched their brand new web browser called ChatGPT Atlas, and right on cue I'm seeing "RIP Google Chrome!" all over the Internet...

I spent the last few days testing Atlas on my MacBook so I could give you my honest take versus rushing out a hype video.

I do think ChatGPT Atlas is a significant AI update which I explain further in my YouTube video below:

πŸ‘‰ Watch: My Thoughts on ChatGPT Atlas Browser

βœ… ChatGPT Atlas Important Details

Here are some important details you should know about ChatGPT Atlas:

  • Access: Available to ALL ChatGPT users across the globe. However, a ChatGPT account is required and installation is only available for Mac users (Windows coming soon).

  • User Interface: To me this looks like a clone of Perplexity's Comet browser. Many are saying that Atlas is built on Chromium (owned by Google), which if true would be super ironic lol.

  • Browser Memory: During setup, Atlas asks if you want to turn on "browser memory." This is a big deal because Atlas can now analyze your entire ChatGPT account history and use that context going forward.

  • Sidebar Feature: The "Ask ChatGPT" sidebar is a key feature that lets you get help with any webpage without leaving the page. This reminds me of Perplexity Comet's "Assistant" sidebar.

  • OpenAI's Data Strategy: Why would OpenAI launch a web browser? Atlas will collect browsing history and search data from millions of users. This will help OpenAI as they launch ChatGPT search ads in 2026. Very similar to Google's strategy with Chrome...
  • Data Privacy: While I don't trust OpenAI (or any big tech company) you do have the ability to toggle off "improve model for everyone" within the browser settings.

  • Search Results Come From Google: When you click the web search tab in Atlas, the results are being pulled straight from Google search! This is laughable and also wild to me how they aren't using Bing search results.

  • Google Chrome Isn't Going Anywhere: I could say a lot on this lol but Google still has a HUGE moat over OpenAI in every category: Data, infrastructure, distribution, talent, etc. Also let's not forget that Google owns the biggest mobile OS in the world (Android) with Chrome being the default browser. Chrome still has 70%+ browser market share worldwide and I doubt they are going anywhere...

πŸš€ 3 Real World Use Cases for ChatGPT Atlas

Now here are some real-world use cases for ChatGPT Atlas that you can try today:

Use Case 1: Quicker Summarization

Click the "Ask ChatGPT" sidebar button while browsing any webpage and instantly get summaries or explanations without leaving the page.

Perfect for summarizing YouTube videos, articles, emails, and more. Reminds of Perplexity Comet's "Assistant" sidebar.

Use Case 2: Agent Mode Research

I tested Agent mode within Atlas by asking it to research my brand and create a complete style guide.

It scraped my website, YouTube, social profiles, and everywhere else I've been mentioned on the Internet to build a "Personal Brand Style Guide" of my tone, voice, and audience.

You can then add this into your ChatGPT Projects or automation workflows.

Use Case 3: Troubleshooting AI Automations & Website Issues

Before AI browsers like Atlas and Comet, troubleshooting meant screenshots, downloading JSON files, and uploading to ChatGPT. Super tedious and annoying...

Now click "Ask ChatGPT" in the sidebar and ask "what is the error in this automation and how do I fix it?" Atlas analyzes your screen in real-time and provides instant troubleshooting advice.

This also works great for website feedback on call-to-actions, menu layout, or overall messaging without the screenshot-and-upload fiasco.

πŸ€” My Final Take on ChatGPT Atlas Browser

I do believe ChatGPT Atlas is a significant update with serious implications for SEO and search behavior. OpenAI's distribution power means this will reach millions of users quickly.

However... I'm not switching from Google Chrome and Perplexity Comet just yet.

TBD as I need more time to evaluate if it fits my current workflows before making that leap.

  • Who Should Use Atlas: If you're already deep in the ChatGPT ecosystem Atlas makes a lot of sense. I've been using ChatGPT Plus since it launched in 2023 so there's a lot of account history I can use to my advantage.

  • Who Shouldn't Use Atlas: If you're using Claude, Gemini, Grok, or Perplexity as your primary AI tool, this probably isn't a big deal for you. Stick with what's working and don't waste your time.

Google Chrome won't become obsolete, but ChatGPT Atlas will definitely shake things up in the AI browser space.

πŸͺ¦ RIP Custom GPTs

In the midst of all this ChatGPT Atlas news, OpenAI released a new update where you can now share ChatGPT Projects publicly with URLs!

This officially makes Custom GPTs obsolete in my opinion. GPTs are still useful but I've always preferred ChatGPT Projects.

Check out my GPTs vs Projects Comparison Video but here's why Projects are superior:

  1. Chat Organization: Projects organize your chats chronologically by date. GPTs scatter everything across your sidebar with no structure.

  2. Advanced Features: Projects give you access to advanced features like Deep Research and ChatGPT Agent Mode. GPTs don’t.

  3. More Training Files: Plus users can upload 25 files per Project vs only 20 for GPTs. Free users get 5 files in Projects (but can’t create GPTs at all).

  4. Project-Only Memory: You can isolate memories to specific Projects so they don’t bleed into other conversations.

  5. Accessibility: Free users of ChatGPT can build Projects (with limitations), but they can’t create GPTs at all. They can only use GPTs others have shared.

  6. Moving Existing Chats: You can move any existing chat into a Project by clicking the three dots and selecting β€œAdd to project.” This is huge for organizing old conversations. GPTs can’t do this.

Are you still a fan of GPTs or do you use ChatGPT Projects? Let me know!
